There was a slight chill to the late autumn breeze, rustling the leaves in swirls of colors. There was one being out this night, staring at the starless sky with jade eyes full of emotion. Tears threatening to spill over her cheeks, she sighed and closed her eyes, letting the frigid air sting her face. Most people would be in the security of their homes at this time of night, all but this sakura hedgehog. This was none other than Amy Rose. Upset over the absence of her blue hero, she had found a sort of serenity in the calmness of the night.

So engulfed in her inner thoughts of worry and torment, she hadn't heard the light footsteps making their way behind her. Keeping his quiet composure, Shadow stopped walking, taking notice of the petite figure sitting on the ground. He stared intently, noting that it was the young female that followed the faker around. He was about to continue on his way when he heard a gentle sniffle. Curiosity overrode his senses and he slowly approached the young flower.

Her ear twitched to the sound of his air shoes brushing across the ground. Cautiously looking over her shoulder, she saw it was Shadow making his way over to her. She quickly tried to wipe at her tear stained eyes. She glanced up to see that Shadow had stopped beside her, arms crossed and looking up at the sky as if in deep thought. Amy wasn't sure what to say to him, she never thought she would have to say anything to him, so they stayed in silence.

It startled Amy when it was Shadow who broke the silence.

"What is troubling you?" he asked, not moving his gaze from the sky. Though he kept his voice emotionless, Amy could see he really wanted to know. Shadow saw her smiled sweetly up at him out of the corner of his eye, pure innocence gleaming in her eyes that seemed to glow in the night. They captivated him, making him unaware that he had been staring. He quickly looked away, his face like stone.

"Nothing is troubling me, Shadow, I'm fine." she said, looking back to the sky with a dreamy expression, eyes still glazed over with held back tears.

"If there is nothing wrong, then what reason are you outside at this time of night?" he questioned, turning his head slightly to look at her. He received no answer. She looked away from him, new tears forming in her eyes. He looked so much like Sonic, but was completely different. She missed the blue hedgehog, worried for his safety, but would have to wait for his return patiently.

" . . . I just wanted some fresh air." she finally answered, her voice quivering along with her lip. Shadow fully turned to look at her, arms dropping to his side as he looked down at her with glowing red eyes. Tears still in her eyes, she looked up, eyes meeting. The longer Shadow looked at the young flower, the more he saw resemblance between her and his old friend . . . Maria. Amy's eyes widened as Shadow bent down, raising his hand to her face, he gently wiped away a stray tear with his thumb.

"Crying does not suit you, Rose." he said in a hushed whisper, the smallest smile growing on his muzzle. Amy smiled back, small, hesitant, but a true smile at the same time.

"Would . . . you like to sit for a while?" Shadow nodded slowly and took a seat beside her, close enough to feel her body heat. So warm. While looking up into the sky, Amy started to fall asleep, leaning against Shadow's shoulder. Unsure of what to do, Shadow hesitantly wrapped an arm around her small form, offering her warmth from the still cold air. She sighed tiredly, but a smile still on her features as she fell asleep against the red streaked hedgehog.
